B.A.T. (Behavior Adjustment Training)
Behavior Adjustment Training (BAT), developed by Grisha Stewart, is a positive, force-free technique that helps dogs learn to respond appropriately to triggers:
How It Works
Identify the threshold
Observe your dog to find the intensity of a trigger that causes them to respond.
Create scenarios
Set up situations where the dog is close to their threshold, but not so close that they become over-aroused.
Wait for an alternative behavior
When the dog offers a polite behavior, like turning their head away or sniffing the ground, mark it and reward them.
Abort trials
If your dog reacts, you can abort the trial by asking for a different behavior and rewarding it.
Give a reality check
BAT gives dogs a chance to learn from experiences that contradict their negative expectations.
BAT is based on repetitions and created scenarios. It combines: observation, long leash techniques, training scenarios, and survival skills.
BAT can help dogs gain confidence and social skills and is a very valuable training method when working with reactivity, fear and aggression.
Jensen Canines has a specialization in working Behavior Adjustment Training with dogs experiencing reactivity, fear, aggression or anxiety.
For more information or to request a Behavioral Assessment and Consultation contact us below or call (805) 978 6945.
We provide your Behavioral Assessment and Consultation free of charge. At the consultation we will discuss in detail with you what problem behaviors are occurring, what you would like to see happen for you and your dog as a result of training and will perform a Behavioral Assessment of your dog. This will allow us to evaluate your needs, the current behavior of the dog, what you would like to see from the training and other variables in order to develop a Behavioral Training Plan specific to your dog and situation.
