CLICKER TRAINING

Clicker training is a positive reinforcement method used to train dogs. It involves using a clicker to mark the exact moment a dog performs a desired behavior, followed by a reward (usually a treat). This helps the dog understand what behavior is being rewarded and reinforces the connection between the action and the positive outcome.

How it works:

1. Association:

The clicker sound becomes a conditioned reinforcer, meaning the dog learns to associate the click with the reward.

2. Marking the Behavior:

The clicker marks the precise moment the dog performs the desired behavior, instantly letting them know they did the right thing.

3. Reward:

Immediately after the click, the dog receives a reward (treat, praise, toy), reinforcing the positive association with the click and the behavior.

4. Shaping:

Through repetition and gradually increasing the complexity of the desired behavior, dogs learn new tricks and commands.

5. Fading the Clicker:

Eventually, the clicker can be phased out as the dog learns to associate the verbal command or gesture with the desired behavior.

Benefits of Clicker Training:

Clear Communication:

The clicker provides immediate feedback, making it easier for the dog to understand what behavior is being rewarded.

Positive Reinforcement:

It focuses on rewarding desired behaviors rather than punishing unwanted ones, creating a positive learning environment.

Faster Learning:

The clear and immediate feedback helps dogs learn faster and more efficiently.

Improved Relationship:

It fosters a stronger bond between the dog and owner through positive interactions and shared learning experiences.

Jensen Canines uses clicker training throughout its training plans as is appropriate to the training being performed and to the preference of the owner.  Clicker training has been successfully shown to dramatically increase the speed and accuracy of training.

We provide your Behavioral Assessment and Consultation free of charge.  At the consultation we will discuss in detail with you what problem behaviors are occurring, what you would like to see happen for you and your dog as a result of training and will perform a Behavioral Assessment of your dog.  This will allow us to evaluate your needs, the current behavior of the dog, what you would like to see from the training and other variables in order to develop a Behavioral Training Plan specific to your dog and situation.
